I ended up here with a few friends, two of whom wanted to watch "the game," and we scored a booth whereby that half of the party had a great view while the other half could fix our gazes elsewhere. Good company and decent wine saved the night, but the food did its damnedest to suck. "Supreme nachos" were tricolored chips from a bag with an extremely meager amount of cheese congealing on a few of them, and a few canned black olives and jalepeno slices thrown on as an afterthought, with a little watery salsa on the side. I think the management confused "supreme" with "piss-poor." Due to an extreme shortage of vegetarian options, John and I ordered the "Chopped Salad" sans chicken. This was described as "Chopped lettuce, grilled basil chicken, Feta cheese, vine ripe tomatoes, cucumber, and toasted pine nuts tossed with fresh thyme and sherry vinaigrette." Sounds passable, right? Wrong. This salad had zero flavor thanks to anemic lettuce, horrible, cold, pasty tomatoes, and generic Balsamic vinaigrette in place of the described dressing. The feta and miserly pine nuts not only didn't improve the flavor, they tasted pronouncedly funky. We complained loudly about the $11 price tag on this plate of shit and, at least, our waitress nicely removed it from the bill. We asked for the mac 'n' cheese as a replacement, hold the "Tasso ham" (the waitress okayed this request). The dish arrived and was tasty enough ... but guess what? The ham was in force. I ate around it and my semi-veg boyfriend sucked it up. All in all, highly unrecommended for vegetarians and conscious humans.

Eggs poached in tomato sauce

Tomato sauce may be my favorite food, so this super-easy dish really, uh, buttered my toast? I have twice recently cooked with bulgur -- first to make these bulgur veggie burgers from Gourmet. Never having made veggie burgers before, I followed the recipe exactly. The mix, which is vegan and middle-eastern-y, was really delicious, but it didn't bind very easily into patties, so next time I'd either chill the "dough" for a while before forming burgers or add something like breadcrumbs (I did cover the outsides with panko so they wouldn't be so sticky/hard to handle). Quite tasty served open-faced on toast, or just by itself as I ate the leftovers. John suggested using them in wraps which I think would be a good solution to the crumbly-texture problem, and would be almost like falafel.

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_pbximTdUvOQ/SGgRoZObEgI/AAAAAAAAAC4/LzkolOk3zvQ/s200/DSCN0611.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5217439553972539906" />Since I have lots of bulgur now, I decided to make tabouli this weekend. I winged this one, soaking the bulgur in boiling water until tender and then mixing with garlic, lemon juice, red wine vinegar, olive oil, green onions, tomatoes, cucumber, radishes, lots of fresh parsley and mint, and feta. Mmmmm! This was sooo much better than packaged tabouli (duh). And super refreshing and healthy-feeling on a hot day. Alas, tragically, after we'd eaten only a little, John dropped the container and spilled most of it all over the kitchen floor. I almost cried but managed to keep it together. It now lives only in my memory.

Two restaurants for Boston vegetarians to daydream about

I know I'm supposed to be searching out good vegetarian eats here in Boston, but sometimes I have to take the show on the road. The show has been on the road a lot lately, and happily I had two transcendant veggie experiences out there. One was at Malabar in Santa Cruz, CA, and the other at Maoz in Philadelphia.

It's probably not really fair to wish Boston could have a Malabar, because Santa Cruz is such an absolute happy hippie land, but I can still dream. Malabar is completely vegetarian, with a really simple, nice Asian-ish interior. The menu is extensive, with a mix of Indian-type dishes as well as some Italian-style and American food. The Indian influence seemed strongest though: see, the five different kinds of kofta on the menu. We shared two appetizers, one a spring roll with watercress and crunchy spiced tempeh bits, and the other an avocado stuffed with a sort of pico de gallo. Both were incredible--the tempeh especially was unique, and memorable. I got garlic ravioli with fennel, spinach and walnuts. Everything was really fresh and the ravioli was definitely homemade. The entree that really blew me away, though, was Brian's pistachio kofta. The kofta nuggets were sort of barrel shaped, and really dense and chewy, covered with a thick nutty, creamy sauce. The taste was closest to Indian, but not exactly the usual malai kofta I've had. I was so, so full when we left this restaurant. Having more than one or two vegetarian options was actually pretty overwhelming--in a good way, of course.

Maoz, though, is a place that's totally easy to imagine in Boston--in Coolidge Corner, maybe, or JP, or even the Financial District. And, I just found out it's a chain. Franchise that, somebody, please! I was at the one on South Street in Philadelphia. It's a tiny falafel place that also serves Belgian french fries. The menu is really basic, with a few different sizes of falafel wraps and the fries. Then there's a counter area where you add your own toppings to the basic falafel, and with maybe five or six sauces to add. The pickles are wonderful, and there's a coleslaw-type salad, seasoned carrots, and some other yummy toppings I don't remember. Everything is cheap ($5 or $6 for a meal), fresh, hot and dee-licious. I've been there a few times, and this last visit I just got french fries and enjoyed every second of eating them. They come in a paper cone, like in actual Belgium, and Maoz has the mayonnaise-y Belgian sauce too, which I skipped in favor of extra salt. Such good stuff. Sigh. I wish it wasn't so far away. I'm thinking I could use maybe a twice-monthly dose of those fries.

Wow, we get a whole week?

This week is World Vegetarian Week, with a few places in Boston offering special menus. That is cool, but damn, I wish they offered those menus all the time!

It's a good excuse to take yourself out for a veggie dinner this week, though. John and I really like Sabra hummus, but you have to get the kind that comes in the flat container with the red-rimmed top as pictured on the website. (I've seen the same brand in a taller, typical-hummus-shaped container and it's not the same.) This is worth searching out; some Boston grocery stores carry it but not all. The roasted red pepper and pine nut varieties are particularly delicious. This hummus is extra smooth and creamy. I must warn you against the "Supremely Spicy" version however; I dig hard on spicy foods and this is one of the few commercial "spicy" products we found overwhelmingly too hot, i.e., really not pleasant to have in your mouth in any quantity.

I also like several varieties of hummus carried at Trader Joe's, namely the horseradish hummus (nicely tangy but not hot) and the three-layer hummus (or the "triple threat" as my brother has termed it), of which layers the cilantro is my very fave. I wish the cilantro hummus was available solo, because it's sooo yummy; it's on the thick/chunky side and good in sandwiches. TJ's also has several new varieties of hummus, including a white bean and basil kind I just bought and really loved. Very creamy and pesto-y. I find that when TJ's starts carrying a product I really like they discontinue it within weeks, so go seek this stuff out now before it's too late!

I require my hummus to be extremely delicious

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_EFyggdGXKVA/R_4wF9wipsI/AAAAAAAAAC8/uQv9eCuFsys/s200/three+starfruits.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5187636699813029570" />

I was so disappointed to be disappointed by Cafe Jaffa, on Gloucester Street near the Pru. On the veggie friendly front, Cafe Jaffa passes muster, but on the actual tastiness front, not as much. Middle Eastern food is so naturally vegetarian friendly, and I was anticipating some delicious plateful of chickpea products, pickled things and fresh vegetables. I sort of got that, piecemail, but nothing about it was amazing.

I split the potato bourekas with my husband for an appetizer, and they weren't bad. I liked the texture and the sesame seeds on top of the little dough packets. But the flavor overall was bland. Then for dinner I ordered a falafel and hummus plate, which came with a salad and pita. I think I was expecting a plate with all that on it together, some kind of varied entree with nice garnishes. My salad came first though, and it was pretty good--a Greek salad with firm pickle slices and feta. Then my entree came, and it was just hummus and four falafel balls on a small appetizer plate, with a shared side of pita bread. So then I wished I had saved some salad and feta to mix with the hummus and put on a pita. The hummus was just OK, but not that flavorful, and same with the falafel, which was too oily and without a distinct flavor other than oil. The hummus was the biggest disappointment. I really think that homemade hummus, when it's the foundation of a vegetarian meal, should have great flavor and consistency (like Farm Grill Rotisserie's, for example). Cafe Jaffa's hummus had too much of one flavor--maybe cumin or red pepper--that overwhelmed it.

I left feeling full, but Cafe Jaffa fell short of what I had been craving.

Finally, a decent burrito

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_EFyggdGXKVA/R-v-g-fUf5I/AAAAAAAAAC0/DlQyTu4O9H8/s200/four+starfruits.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5182515638703521682" />

Veggie friendliness: Four out of five stars

It's sort of terrible that a national chain restaurant is by far the best Mexican in the Boston area. But really, Chipotle's burritos are an order of magnitude better than any other place I've been in Boston. Anna's Taqueria is just bad, with no salsa options, cheese in American slice form and weird, tasteless vegetables that should not be in burritos. And their rice is not vegetarian. I liked the burritos at Piquante in Central Square, but Chipotle in the Dedham Mall is the only really decent burrito I've had since moving away from my beloved Illegal Pete's in Boulder.

Chipotle is veggie friendly too, which maybe isn't so authentic (the slogan at another Boulder Mexican place was "Praise the lard") but I'm not complaining. There are tasty sauteed peppers and onions, two kinds of vegetarian beans--pinto and black--and plenty of flavorful salsa options. And, the rice is just so yummy, with cilantro and lime. The tortillas are just right and they have the big warmer/steamer thing for them. The guacamole is also excellent. The only thing that could be improved is if they mixed all your burrito fillings together at the end before wrapping. But that was always what set Illegal Pete's apart, so if that's the only thing missing, I can happily eat Chipotle's burritos until my next Colorado visit.

Also, Chipotle is cheap and they have a big vat of real brewed iced tea. They're in Dedham, Somerville and Brookline that I know of in the Boston area so far.

Vintage's gnocchi is newfangled

UPDATE on 3/25: Apparently Vintage is now closed. It must have closed in the past week or so...one of my fellow Restaurant Week diners drove by over the weekend and saw it was closed, and read that the restaurant had financial troubles. Sad!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_EFyggdGXKVA/R-VewOfUf4I/AAAAAAAAACs/_qXTqswikPI/s200/three+starfruits.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5180651128975818626" />

Veggie friendliness: Three out of five stars

I can't believe how much I enjoyed eating at a steakhouse, but my food was really, really good at Vintage, in West Roxbury. I went during Restaurant Week, and couldn't get anything on the RW menu because it was almost entirely meat-based (there was one good looking salad, but they don't let you order just one part of the RW menu). I ordered a basic salad to start, with Boston lettuce and a tangy dressing--so delicious and pretty too. There's only one vegetarian entree on the menu, and it's not specifically described--it's just called "for the vegetarians" or something like that. The night I went it was a gnocchi with caramelized onions, peppers and fontina cheese. It wasn't a traditional gnocchi in little dumpling shapes; it was gnocchi dough formed into two spirals with the vegetables and cheese wrapped up inside, with a dab of sauce on the plate. It was really delicious and the texture was also great. The "gnocchi" part of the spiral was a little grainy, almost like polenta.

Vintage is a really nice place; it still feels pretty new and the atmosphere is not very Route 1 at all. We had great service too -- no funny looks from the waiter when asking veggie questions. I don't know if I'd go back there for a non-RW dinner since it really is meat-focused, and it's also pretty expensive. My entree was of course much cheaper than steak, but still over $20. But if I was dragged there by steakhouse-loving friends, I wouldn't be too upset about it.

Nothing but side dishes at Sonsie

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_EFyggdGXKVA/R4fug3RHXyI/AAAAAAAAACc/KBMK3NTTW1Y/s320/two+starfruits.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5154350546907782946" />
Veggie friendliness (at brunch, anyway): Two out of five stars

I got shot down by the waitress during brunch at Sonsie more than I liked. She told me that they didn't accept any substitutions on any dish, which immediately cut my options down. The side dishes I got were yummy, but it was frustrating not to be able to order any egg dishes at all. To be fair, they did offer French toast, which was vegetarian, and the huevos rancheros could be ordered without the sausage side -- but I’m always skeptical of the true vegetarian-ness of refried beans, and the eggs could only be made sunny side up (not even the way the eggs were cooked could be substituted), which I am not a fan of.

Anyway, I enjoyed the home fries immensely -- crisp with onion slices and plenty of salt. The yogurt with honey and granola was also very good, with chewy, probably homemade granola. The English muffin wasn’t that warm and by the time the butter finally arrived, it was too late for it to melt.

So, it was a nice place to be for Sunday brunch, but sadly lacking in veggie friendliness. I had better luck there another time for drinks and appetizers, so I think I'll stick to the later-in-the-day Sonsie.

Restaurant review: Pomodoro

I'd been wanting to try this little Italian spot in Brookline for months, but my boyfriend had a bad experience there in the past (namely, he'd ordered rabbit, and when the waiter accidentally gave the dish to a man at the next table, had to watch that man eat it even though he hadn't ordered rabbit -- he thought it was an amuse bouche, perhaps?). This Saturday night John agree to give it another shot, and we weren't sorry.

We had 8:45 reservations and had to wait 15 minutes to be seated, but the bartender cleared a spot for us at the bar and brought our drinks right away, as well as a plate of chunks of warm, toasty, airy peasant bread with olive oil and olives, which we could have easily filled up on if not careful. After we were seated and ordered, the adorable pregnant Irish waitress brought us a free order of calamari as well. Now that's service.

I like the menu at Pomodoro because there are lots of main-dish pastas -- sometimes pasta is relegated to the "first course" section of the menu at nicer Italian restaurants. And many of these pasta options are vegetarian. They all sounded delicious to me, but I went for the roasted vegetable lasagna. This comes with a very rich, delicious tomato sauce -- must be where the place gets its name. It's a very sizable chunk, too, with plenty of vegetables among the layers of delicate pasta and cheese; I could only manage to eat about 20% of it after all the pre-meal delights.

To make matters better (or worse) we were also served a free dessert -- a little cube of tiramisu that tasted like it included Irish cream -- methinks this spot has the same owners as the nearby and lovely Matt Murphy's Irish pub.

A great romantic spot for a date.

Asian dishes to keep vegetarians warm all winter

Bibimpop at Village Sushi

Village Sushi is one of our Roslindale staples -- always good for a last-minute dinner out and great for sushi takeout too. I finally tried a non-sushi item off their extensive menu recently -- the vegetarian bibimbop in a hot pot (the hot pot version is an extremely-worth-it extra $3). I love all things crunchy, and the rice gets cooked to the bottom of the hot pot, and forms a crunchy crust, and then you stir it and more parts get crunchy...mmm. The rice also has tofu, mushrooms, daikon radish, sprouts and possibly another vegetable I can't remember. All good things, and with a red spicy sauce on the side that really makes the dish's flavor. The bibimbops all come with an egg on top, and warning -- it's eggy. I had to do some quick yolk containment with my spoon and Brian's help so it wouldn't get on everything. I really don't think there's going to be anything better on cold nights this winter than this dish. The hot pot keeps it all so warm till the last bite, and I actually felt overheated when I finished eating -- no small feat for me between November and March around here.

Ramen at Wagamama

Wagamama recently opened in Faneuil Hall, and I think it's the best and most veggie-friendly sit-down restaurant in that immediate area. The first time I ate at a Wagamama was 10+ years ago, in London, and it was this total veggie zen moment for me. It was probably the first place I had eaten out as a vegetarian that had multiple meat-free dishes marked on the menu, and definitely the best noodles I'd had up till that point. The first time I ate at the Boston one, a few months ago, I was disappointed -- but things like that are hardly ever as yummy as you remember. Especially 10 years later, and not in London.

Anyway, it's been freezing here this week -- very much soup weather. I'd only had ramen once before, at this place in Denver, and I loved it. I hadn't come across ramen anywhere in Boston though. But Wagamama serves ramen, and the vegetarian version at Wagamama really warmed me up the other night. The broth had a pretty mild flavor, with a touch of soy sauce and sesame oil. The tofu was excellent, nice and browned, and the scallions, leeks and bean sprouts added crunch. The enormous bowl came with an oversized, bamboo-handled spoon, which held a huge slurp of soup in each bite. (It might have ruined me for other utensils, though. I want to eat everything with a giant spoon.) The wheat noodles weren't so flavorful, but all in all this was a perfect vegetarian meal for a cold and windy night in Boston. It made me warm on the inside.

A vegetarian sandwich without even a trace of hummus

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_EFyggdGXKVA/RyDQlxwyPzI/AAAAAAAAACU/2Kc21-7mcGk/s200/four+starfruits.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5125325723379318578" />

I know, it's a little hard to imagine. I love vegetarian sandwiches with hummus, of course, with some cheddar cheese and a bunch of veggies. However, it's a really nice change to have a vegetarian sandwich that's different from the usual and that you probably wouldn't (or couldn't) make at home.

I got the "Elephant Walking on Eggs" sandwich at Parish Cafe, on Boylston Street near Arlington. It's filled with a fluffy omelette that hardly tastes eggy at all--my favorite kind of eggs. It tastes more like the shredded vegetables and salty goat cheese that make up the omelette. And the buttered crusty-outside-soft-inside baguette is a yummy counterpart that made this sandwich a hearty dinner. The chef at Elephant Walk created this veggie gem (apparently chefs from other Boston restaurants invent the sandwiches on Parish Cafe's menu), and I think I like Elephant Walk's cuisine better in sandwich form than I did when I ate there.

The one other veggie sandwich, which my friend ordered, did indeed have hummus, but a nice twist in a white bean variety.

We shared the vegetable potsticker appetizer -- also excellent with the simple, salty kind of soy dipping sauce that I always find really satisfying, with bits of something (garlic? ginger? scallions?) floating in it. The other vegetarian app was corn cakes. The atmosphere is bar-like, and the restaurant is a busy place where you'll be cozied up to the next table. I don't really know how much fancy sandwiches should cost, but $20 each covered the bill and tip, which seemed reasonable. The Parish Cafe has a good drink menu too, though we skipped drinks to be totally clearheaded at our next destination--the Tori Amos show at the Orpheum. My not-eggy egg sandwich was ideal fuel for the following few hours of Tori adoration.

A tower of tastiness in Malden

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_EFyggdGXKVA/RxPRE6pZ7iI/AAAAAAAAACM/k4014XyO9tQ/s200/four+starfruits.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5121667083642990114" />

I had dinner at Exchange Street Bistro in Malden this weekend, and it was yummy. The bistro was lovely and the food delicious, and it's near the Orange Line (I think. We drove, and I definitely couldn't find it again without my Maldenite friend's help.)

We shared the broccoli rabe and provolone egg rolls, dipped in spicy mustard sauce...the bitter greens and crunchy shell were a fabulous, unexpected combination.

There's just one vegetarian entree, the eggplant napoleon. The flavors were similar to eggplant parmesan, with an orangey-colored tomato sauce as the base layer and then a pile of (definitely homemade) wide pasta noodles on top of that. The breaded eggplant alternates layers in a tower with portabella mushrooms, pesto, mozzarella and some ricotta, too. I love meals that are full of surprises and different flavors, and the napoleon was fun to eat and offered a nice variety of tastes and textures through the layers. Also, the mushrooms were very removable, which made me happy.

Exchange Street was pricey, so the other benefit to being vegetarian here is that the eggplant dish was by far the cheapest dinner option. The veggie pickings are pretty slim here, but the ones I tried were yummy enough to warrant four stars.

The joy of tofu

I've been vegetarian a long time, but it's still taken a lot of dietary evolving for me to put those words together. It wasn't long ago that I wouldn't have even been able to conceive of "joy" followed by "tofu." However, I have come to appreciate the bean curd beast, especially since moving to Boston.

Here are my top three tofu choices, in Boston/Cambridge:

1. At Pho and I, on Huntington Ave. near Symphony Hall. Pho and I's fried rice comes with perfectly sized, perfectly crispy and flavorful chunks of tofu. The tofu chunks are about the size of ice cubes, so you can eat them in one bite, and the inside is just as yummy as the fried outside -- no bland mealiness to be found.

2. In the salad bar at the Whole Foods on Cambridge Street near MGH. They offer amazing sesame tofu in the salad bar. It's the only tofu I can actually eat cold. It has the best firm texture and a sweetish flavor, with tons of sesame seeds and scallion pieces. It's perfect on a basic salad with some kind of light soy dressing.

3. At Anise in Kendall Square, near the Landmark theater. Anise's Sichuan-style flower tofu appetizer is sort of soupy (spoon definitely required), with silken tofu and little crunchy bits on top. This makes the top three primarily because it made me appreciate silken tofu, which is a huge feat. The spicy saucy stuff and the crunchy bits with the smooth tofu--mmm. It's a delectable combination.

(Totally off the tofu topic: the green beans entree at Anise is wonderful.)

Bonus (but definitely not in Boston): The best tofu ever is actually at a Thai place way the hell up in New Hampshire -- Spicy Lime, on the side of the White Mountain Highway in North Conway. The tofu in the noodle/veggie/cashew sauce dish I had actually rendered me speechless while I was eating it. I felt so sad when it was all gone. It was fried, so it had a nice crispy outside, but the inside had great flavor and texture, like it had been marinated just right. The waiter was also really nice when I wanted to mix up sauces and noodles vs. rice to make the concoction I ended up with. It was probably two years ago that I ate there, and I like to dream up possible weekend trips around another dinner at Spicy Lime.

A fancy pizza party

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_EFyggdGXKVA/RvgkdqpZ7hI/AAAAAAAAACE/E6ALCPGZGz0/s200/four+starfruits.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5113877468961959442" />

Pizza is a great equalizer in a veggie/carnivore crowd. Even meat eaters like cheese pizza, so there's almost always a veggie option when there's pizza ordering going on in a group (I'm thinking mostly of work right now, when we get 15 pizzas delivered for a meeting). And then most people like onions, peppers or mushrooms, so those are pretty standard pizza toppings and some good dependable toppings for vegetarians.

Ah, but there's a whole world of fancy-pants vegetarian pizza out there beyond the cheese, none more satisfying than at Emma's in Cambridge. I really devoured the #3 sweet potato pizza, with caramelized onions, goat cheese and spinach, and lots of delectable rosemary leaves too. My friends went carnivore for our other pizza, so I didn't have to share too much of my tasty veggie-friendly pie.

I do like my classic cheese pizza, though, so I could have used a bit more grease and saltiness than Emma's provides. It feels more like going out for dinner than going out for pizza, so I'd stick with standard pizza if you're having a craving.

Restaurant review: Delfino

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_EFyggdGXKVA/RvgAKqpZ7gI/AAAAAAAAAB8/W_MJHRnunMg/s200/five+starfruits.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5113837560125844994" />

I am a little afraid to gush about Delfino, because it is so delicious and close to my house, and I want to keep it a delicious secret. But really, everyone should eat at this fantastic Italian restaurant in Roslindale Square. The bread alone, served when you sit down and dipped in their olive oil, is enough to make me weak in the knees.

The vegetable antipasto appetizer is very share-able for a group, but plan ahead to save some bread to dip in the cheesy olive-y oil that's left on the plate. The best appetizer, I think, is the broccoli rabe sauteed with garlic and olive oil. It's just a plateful of perfectly cooked greens in perfect oil. For this, too, ration your bread, because the oil left at the end is superb. To avoid any too-much-of-a-good-thing syndrome, I like to share this app too.

There are probably four or five vegetarian pasta entrees on Delfino's menu at any time, since they change their menu slightly every few months. My favorite standby is pasta puttanesca with no anchovies. That's followed closely by pasta rounds, which are like manicotti tipped on their side in a puddle of tomato sauce. After that, when I'm trying to mix it up a little, I go for the ricotta gnocchi in whatever vegetarian incarnation is on the menu.

OK, so I have obviously eaten at Delfino many, many times...but after lots of happy meals, I can honestly say they've earned their five stars with consistently flavorful and satisfying (pants-expanding) food. The only negative last time was a probably new waitress who wasn't as helpful as other waitstaff usually are in making slight changes to dishes -- anchovy-free puttanesca or leaving tomatoes out of a dish.

Orinoco flow

Not really a full-on review, just a recommendation for a place to try -- Orinoco: A Latin Kitchen. This cute-as-a-button corner spot in the South End (on Shawmut) comes complete with cute-as-a-button waitstaff. I arrived on Friday night in a group of four and all the inside tables had just been filled, but we were allowed to sit and order food at the bar counter. (There was also outdoor seating, but one of our party was without jacket.) Most of the options, which sounded capital-D Delicious, were animal-flesh-based, but there are several vegetarian arepas ("traditional Venezuelan grilled corn pocket sandwiches"), and the verde empanada, which I ordered, was simply scrumptious -- filled with wild mushrooms and other delights, and served with a fabulous salad. I supplemented with a side of rice and smoky, smoky black beans and it was a perfect light dinner. This would be a good spot to try with your non-veg friends. Bar Lola is a few blocks over on Commonwealth, and it offers a smaller version of Tapeo's menu. The two restaurants are really very similar, though Bar Lola has fewer veggie options than Tapeo. It still has the basics, though--cheesey vegetable puffs, the classic Spanish tortilla (omelette), cold artichoke hearts and roasted peppers, and warm potatoes with garlic and olive oil. Bar Lola also had a dish of roasted vegetables and mini veggie-stuffed cannelloni in a tomato-cheese sauce.

The tapas satisfied me, for the most part, and there were enough vegetarian options to provide a good variety for dinner. A few dishes, though -- the roasted vegetable and tortilla -- were so salty that my mouth felt almost turned inside out. I love salty food, too, so I think the salt level must really have been overboard.

A group of us shared the chocolate torte dessert, which was so rich. The dark chocolate part was almost as solid as a bar of chocolate, and the white chocolate top was light and creamy. Just a few bites was enough. Bar Lola's sangria was fine, though unmemorable and without any fruit in it -- according to the waiter, the restaurant was completely out of fruit.

Restaurant review: M.J. Not so much for the vegetarian crowd, however. This is a strictly salad-and-french-fries establishment, and the salad I had wasn't even that tasty. The lemon-basil vinaigrette mostly just tasted like oil and some of the lettuce was suspicously on the verge of not-so-freshness.

The french fries with curry sauce were yummy, though, and there was also a cheddar cheese sauce option with the fries. I think this is a good place to satisfy a french fry craving and have a beer, and meet up with friends, since the restaurant is enormous and well situated. Otherwise, though, eat dinner elsewhere. Also, the service was barely passable.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://veggiefriendly.blogspot.com/2007/09/restaurant-review-mj-oconnors.html' title='Restaurant review: M.J. I usually walk over there, or at least pass through, when I'm home on a Saturday. The highlight of the farmer's market (aside from the live jazz band that plays there from time to time, and Boschetto's pizza) are the shaded crates of fruits and vegetables from a suburban farm stand. MacArthur Farm pulls up their truck every week and brings us city folk all kinds of fresh produce, lots of the veggies with dirt still on them, which I love. Today the ripe tomatoes filled several big crates -- they were huge, and uniformly red, with some cracked and overflowing with sticky juice and seeds. The cucumbers were the biggest I've seen there all summer.

Brookwood Community Farm, a new (that I've noticed, anyway) farmer's market participant had a table set up today. They sold colorful heirloom tomatoes and exquisite, shiny little peppers of many varieties -- this list of vegetables covers their offerings. The Black Cherry tomatoes looked like red grapes on steroids, and the Sun Golds were teeny. I added to my veggie loot with a few of Brookwood's tomatoes. The guy working the table explained Brookwood's scheme -- the recently started farm near the Blue Hills sells shares to stakeholders, who then get a box of vegetables each week during growing season.

Here's what I did with the tomatoes for dinner:

Just olive oil, red wine vinegar, basil from our Boston Organics box, parsley, salt and pepper, and slivers (sort of thick slivers) of Parmesan on top.

This fleeting harvest always feels to me like a harbinger of the dreary, flavorful-tomato-free New England winter to come. I know, we still have all of wonderful fall with pumpkins and apples, and I bet even another few weeks of these perfectly juicy tomatoes--but this tomato bounty is so precious when I think of waiting a whole year before tasting such late-summer deliciousness again.

Tappin' the Tapas

So Tapas Corner in Beverly, MA (trying to be friendly to the North Shore veggie people), is by far the best veggie-friendly, modestly priced place I've been to so far. It's not exactly a fine dining experience (we usually take our Tapas to go) but there are some tables outside so eaters can people-watch in downtown Beverly. Basically, tapas is a 'smaller portion' or 'sampling' -- which is the way the Spaniards (and most Europeans) eat. Of course, you can order small portions at Tapas, but personally, I get the larger size. The food comes in bowls, called 'Tapas bowls' which you can fill with essentially anything you want -- hummus, baba gahnnouj, taboulie, tofu, stir-fried eggplant, fried plantains, a variety of cheeses, crazy vegetables that only vegetarians have heard about, etc. It's either served over fresh greens or brown or white rice and is cooked in one of a million different sauces they make. It's all super healthy, but for the more health-conscious (or the boring eater) you can get everything steamed in spring water. One of my favorite things about Tapas is their daily Specials board, which features the most crazy, delicious concoctions ever. Average large tapa bowls are between $7-9, and are extremely filling. Oh, and the tomato lime soup and vegetarian chilie are out of this world. ~~Que coman bien!

In the zon

Another good veggie-friendly restaurant in Jamaica Plain: Zon's. It has a cozy-hip-romantic atmosphere and is relatively inexpensive (relative to Ten Tables, I guess; entrees under $20). I dined here last night and must admit I shared a non-veg special with my main squeeze -- salmon with grilled asparagus, horseradish cream sauce and tomato-basil risotto. (The risotto would have made a great dish on its own. YUM.) But Zon's always offers a couple of delectable vegetarian options -- last night they had an eggplant parmesan dish with spinach that sounded great. I've also had a kind of veggie sampling plate there with little grain cakes and sauces and things. The comfort food contingent is high -- try the homemade potato chips with onion dip app or the ice cream sandwiches for dessert (both cookies and ice cream homemade).

Only drawback to this place is they don't have a liquor license, but if you aren't in the mood for beer or wine they offer a selection of wacky liqueur-based bevs like the "Venetian spritzer" -- Campari and prosecco. Bitterlicious.

Recipe: Linguine with Carrot Ribbons and Lemon-Ginger Butter

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_EFyggdGXKVA/RuFgq33VmaI/AAAAAAAAABM/LDbn_K0WbjU/s200/linguine.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5107469742081677730" />
Mmm, mmm, this stuff is good--a really simple and unique pasta dish. The first time we made it, Brian and I dubbed it an Instant Classic. We made it again the other night and it was even better, since the first time we forgot to reserve some cooking liquid, which left it a little dry. The ginger is one of those ingredients we never have in the house, so I got a big hunk of it, chopped it all up and put it in a bag in the freezer to have on hand.

4 long carrots (about 9 oz.), peeled into long ribbons
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter
1 tbsp. packed, finely grated lemon peel
1 tbsp. minced peeled fresh ginger
2 yellow or orange bell peppers, cut lengthwise into skinny strips
8 ounces linguini (fresh is best)
2/3 cup freshly grated Parmesan
1 1/2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice

Melt butter over medium heat. Add lemon peel and ginger; stir one minute. Add carrots and bell peppers. Saute until just tender, about 5 minutes.
Meanwhile, cook pasta in boiling salted water till just tender. Drain and reserve 1/2 cup of cooking liquid.
Add pasta, 1/4 cup reserved cooking liquid, cheese and lemon juice to skillet. Toss until sauce coats pasta, adding more cooking liquid if dry. Season with salt and pepper.

This is from Bon Appetit, which isn't a notably veggie-friendly magazine, but once in a while has a good find. It's funky Mexican, with sides like smoked hominy and green apple-grapefruit salsa, and plantain and thick corn chips alongside the jicama guacamole. It gets four stars for veggie friendliness primarily because there's an all-important asterisk at the end of many of the entrees, which means that pan-seared tofu can be substituted for the meat. This is key, because otherwise there aren't any meat- or fish-free options. The four stars are also for general deliciousness.

I got the tofu substituted for a duck dish, with jicama slaw and fried plantains on the side. The flavors were so interesting -- a little spicy, a little Caribbean -- and the tofu was nice and crispy on the outside and seasoned well. The fresh margarita mixes are phenomenal. The first time I went to Lolita a few years ago, we had a blood orange mix that I have actually craved many times since then. During the most recent visit, in August, the nightly mix was watermelon, which was also delicious with the brought-our-own tequila.

Brian and his sister got meaty things, so I didn't try anything other than the wicked yummy guacamole and my tofu entree. Brave Brian tried an appetizer with huitlacoche, a scary-looking corn fungus that I'd recently read about in Edible Boston--check out the summer cover for the picture. I know that fungus is technically vegetarian, but seriously--it has a life of its own (yes, I'm talking to you, Quorn).

Restaurant review: Ten Tables

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_EFyggdGXKVA/Rt9sZH3VmZI/AAAAAAAAABE/fnRuzUopXcM/s320/four+starfruits.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5106919681325111698" />

Veggie friendliness: Four (out of five) stars

My disclaimer about Ten Tables is that I've only been there on one of their fixed-menu nights, which they have once a week. I didn't see a regular menu when I was there. But everything I had was excellent, and I got an extremely veggie-friendly vibe from the whole experience. I've also heard that they have a vegetarian fixed-price menu available every night in addition to the regular menu, which is very cool.

I'm usually wary of fixed menus, since my biggest restaurant fear is being brought unspecified plates of things. There's too much mushroom risk involved. But at Ten Tables, the waiter actually asked me what ingredients I didn't like, and if there was something special I was in the mood for. That is serious veggie friendliness, and personalized dishes just taste that much better. I got four courses in all: a salad with jicama and other crunchy parts; a pretty carrot risotto; a crispy and cheesy potato galette; and a caramel-y fruity dessert. It was satisfying, and it was actually fun to get four different surprise courses without fear of mushrooms.

This place feels fancy, like we could have been celebrating an anniversary, but the price was decent--I think it was a $35 set price for the food and wine too.

So, four stars to Ten Tables, and a place I'll definitely go back to.

Veggie Friendly puts down virtual roots

Last night I was eating dinner in Bermuda, at a restaurant called the Swizzle Inn (the one on the South Shore), and for dinner I had a salad and french fries.

I think my fellow vegetarians may understand that a salad-and-french-fry dinner means only one thing: There were no other veggie-friendly options. To be fair to the Swizzle, there was another option -- a veggie quesadilla. But, the description of this quesadilla mentioned that it had mozzarella cheese, and that didn't sound quite right to me. I like my quesadillas with more, you know, Mexican-sounding cheese.

So it was a Greek salad, decent, with good dressing, and a basket of very hot but not salty enough french fries. Not a bad dinner, really. I think the reason the salad-and-french-fry dinner was so unsatisfying was because the first thing I had seen on the menu was a tasty-looking veggie burger. The ingredients mentioned had included lentils, mild curry, and caramelized onions on top. Mmmm...now that sounds like a veggie burger that's worth its place in the burger world. However, the veggie burger is only available at the Swizzle before 6 p.m., inexplicably. And, it was close to 8 p.m., and we came back home to Boston today, so it looks like it'll have to wait till the next trip. The tantalizing, unavailable veggie burger certainly made my salad and french fries just a few degrees less appetizing than they were anyway.

And while I was eating, I was thinking how much I would have loved some kind of warning that it would be one of those nights, where my restaurant dinner options would be a salad and french fries. I'd especially like to know how veggie-friendly a restaurant is here in Boston, where I eat out much more often than I do in Bermuda. So, here goes: my blog about vegetarian eating in the Boston area (and other places I go sometimes).

OK, so this post can serve as my first review: I give the Swizzle Inn three stars. I thought I'd go with two stars, but in retrospect, I think it deserves three stars instead of two, mostly because of the mere existence of the lentil/curry/caramelized onions burger. Also, the hummus added at least half a star, as did the waiter's shared bafflement about the unavailability of the burger after 6 p.m.

However, on another, non-veggie-related note, the service was really, really slow. I'll probably chalk that up to the whole island time thing.
